  5. CELLULAR FRAUD VERY PREVENTABLE, 
  6. ACCORDING TO AUDIOVOX PRESIDENT

  9. (BPS) -- Eighteen people arrested last week in New York on charges of illegally
  10. using their cellular telephones would have been unable to commit such a crime 
  11. had they been using cellular phones from Audiovox Corp., according to John 
  12. Shalam, president of Audiovox.
  13.  
  14. The 18 were arrested on charges of illegally altering memory chips in their 
  15. mobile phones so they could make calls without being charged.
  16.  
  17. "The sad thing is that this crime is very preventable," Shalam said.  "If this 
  18. type of alteration is attempted on an Audiovox cellular phone, the phone is 
  19. rendered useless."

  21. According to Louis Antoniou, vice president of Audiovox's mobile electronics 
  22. division, such tampering is prevented on Audiovox phones by an algorithm built 
  23. into the software which prevents alteration of the phone's electronic serial 
  24. number (E.S.N).

  26. "If someone attempts to change the E.S.N. without using the algorithm, the
  27. phone will not activate," Antoniou said.  "As far as we know, such prevention 
  28. against tampering is unique to Audiovox."

  30. Cellular phones have memory chips which contain both a mobile identification 
  31. number (M.I.N.) and the E.S.N.  When a call is made, both the numbers are 
  32. transmitted to the mobile carrier where a computer checks the validity of the 
  33. E.S.N.  If the number is valid, the call goes through and the cost is charged 
  34. to a billing number provided by the M.I.N. chip.

  36. By reprogramming the E.S.N., those arrested apparently caused other people to 
  37. be billed for their calls.

  39. Officials estimate that the fraud cost local mobile telephone companies 
  40. approximately $40,000 per month.  Nationwide, carriers were losing an estimated
  41. $3 million.
